The IAF has achieved an extraordinary milestone in the field of mountaineering by successfully summiting three unclimbed peaks in the Ladakh region which was recently cleared by the Indian Mountaineering Federation. The team of 18 highly motivated Air Warriors led by Wing Commander Namit Rawat was flagged-in on 27JUL12 by the Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne. This is the first ever expedition to unclimbed peaks at altitudes of 20112 ft, 21200 ft and 21010 ft, and also the first of its kind where three peaks have been successfully summited in one expedition. The team consisted of 11 first time climbers and an Air Force Civilian which is also a first of its kind.
The Indian Air Force is likely to approach the Indian Mountaineering Federation for naming these peaks after Air Force legends:
Peak – I (20112 Ft) – Mt. Nirmaljeet (named after Flying OfficerNirmaljeet Singh Sekhon, the hero of 1971 war and the only recipient of Nation’s highest gallantry award,Param Vir Chakra in Indian Air Force)
