Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping on Thursday underlined the need to make Gwadar Port fully functional, emphasizing that connectivity of the port through road and rail networks with the rest of the country would bring economic prosperity in the country, particularly in Balochistan.
It was decided to summon the concerned departments to discuss the issue in detail and make recommendations for provision of funds to connect the port through rail and road networks. (Ref: Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qasim Authority (PQA), Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC))
In addition, the issue of non-availability of potable water in Gawadar was also discussed by the committee. It was pointed out that people of the area were suffering due to water issues creating drinking water scarcity and compelling them to migrate from the area. Senator Rubina Irfan suggested that provision of basic amenities of life like health and education including provision of clean drinking water should be ensured. She also proposed to train local population in the port handling sector to enable the locals to earn a decent livelihood.
The meeting was attended by Senators Rubina Irfan, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Naseema Ehsan, Nuzhat Sadiq, Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo, Hafiz Hamdullah besides Deputy Chairman Senate Sabir Ali Baloch.Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri and senior officials of the ministry were also present.
