Union Minister of Culture & HUPA Kumari Selja on 10JUL12 said that an agreement had been signed to acquire the Gandhi Kallanbach Archives, which have now been withdrawn from the proposed Sotheby’s auction. The acquired materials will be housed in the National Archives of India.
An Agreement was finalized in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs and the National Archives of India with Sotheby’s and the Sarid family. A payment of GBP 825,250 (USD 1.2 mn) has been released to Sotheby’s and the lot has been withdrawn from auction and transferred to the Government of India.
The collection has aroused interest partly because of last year’s Gandhi biography by Pultizer-prize winning author Joseph Lelyveld, which cited letters between Gandhi and Kallenbach that some reviewers interpreted as hinting at a homosexual relationship.
